Meet the Team

We are a group of undergraduate and graduate students in the Digital Humanities program at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Shanya is a 4th year student at UCLA who will be graduating in June 2016 with a major in Sociology and a minor in Digital Humanities. Shanya served as the Project Manager for particular project, while also having a hand in coordinating publicity and other miscellaneous assets. After graduation, she plans to travel during summer, and will begin her job search when she returns in the fall. Shanya hopes to utilize the skills and attributes used in her studies at UCLA to pursue a career in public relations and marketing in the Los Angeles area.

Marika is a doctoral student in Information Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she is also pursuing Certificates in Gender Studies and the Digital Humanities. Her research interests include archives, gender and sexuality, affect, cultural, queer and feminist theories, bodies and emodiment, and memory. She is working on a critical archival studies dissertation that examines nostalgia, representation, and the records of HIV/AIDS activism.

Data Visualization Specialist

William was born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California. He will be graduating from the University of California Los Angeles in June 2016 in Sociology and a Digital Humanities minor. In his free time, he enjoys dancing, cold brew coffee, wake surfing and hiking. For this project, he served as both the publicity coordinator and one of the web designers. He plans to utilize the skills he attained from UCLA’s Digital Humanities coursework (including in this project) in his postgraduate plans, as he pursues a career in digital marketing and digital media planning.

William Lam

Hanna was studying World Arts and Cultures (WAC) at UCLA, with a minor in Digital Humanities (DH). She studied Non-Western counter narratives, focusing mainly on community-based arts activism, studies of visual culture, and critical ethnographies. As a DH minor, she was interested in the cultural and social impacts of new media and information technologies. For her senior thesis she curated a show at As It Stands titled Lost Wax, featuring black female artists who re-appropriate, or re-cast, imagery that has been historically weaponized against non-normative bodies. She was the web designer for the original site of this project.

Monica was a 3rd year, World Arts and Cultures major and Digital Humanities minor. She focused on creating data visualizations for this project with the hopes of making our data more accessible. Monica plans to continue her studies in both departments at UCLA before her early graduation next winter.

Karla was a 4th year, Applied Linguistics and Spanish Community and Culture double major and Digital Humanities minor. Karla was the metadata specialist for this project. She was employed at UCLA Housing’s IT department. Her post grad plan was to land a full time job in a technical or entertainment business. After a year gap she will be striving to obtaining an MBA on a graduate level.

Aya was a 4th year, Sociology major and Digital Humanities minor. Aya focused on web design and publicity for this project. She was a marketing intern for Awaken Arts, a non-profit organization, and a New Student Advisor for UCLA’s New Student and Transition Programs. She was also a part of the Central Valley Project at UCLA and the Transfer Student Alliance. Aya hoped to pursue a career in marketing or public relations in entertainment after graduation.

Miriam Posner is the Digital Humanities program coordinator and a member of the core DH faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles. As a digital humanist, she is particularly interested in the visualization of large bodies of data from cultural heritage institutions, and the application of digital methods to the analysis of images and video. She is very proud to work with such talented students.

Meet the Redesign Team

We are a group of undergraduate students in the Digital Humanities program at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Charlotte Breslin comes from the suburbs just outside of New York City and will be graduating from UCLA in June 2018 with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Digital Humanities. She was the Project Manager and Content Strategist of the team. She worked on the content of the website and helped keep everyone on schedule. After college, Charlotte is pursuing her fashion dreams back home and hopes to use everything she learned in Psychology and DH to help customers stay in trend and help retail succeed in the digital world.

Upon graduation, she plans on using her DH skills by working as a Product or UI/UX designer. In her free time she enjoys making vegan pastries, watching documentaries, and doing arts & crafts.

Wendy is a third year Economics major and Digital Humanities minor. As one of the web designers, she focused on developing a modern look and user-friendly layout. She adapted graphics from the orignal website and gave them a new look. In her free time she enjoys practicing hand-lettering, doing arts & crafts, playing tennis and trying new food.

Gaby is a fourth year Communication major and Digital Humanities Minor. For this project, she was part of the website development team that created a live demo site of our redesign. After graduating, Gaby plans to pursue a career in Product or UX/UI design while exploring photography and videography as a hobby and potential side hustle.

Remi Kim is a third year Communications major and Digital Humanities minor. She was part of the website development team that helped redesign a more functional and navigable site. Fun fact: She has spent a good chunk of her college career dancing in dirty UCLA parking lots with hip-hop teams.

Janet Luu is a third year UCLA student graduating in 2019 as an Economics major and Digital Humanities. For the website redesign project, she was involved with researching and reorganizing the website’s information architecture. In her free time she enjoys going rock climbing and trying out local restaurants.

Jonathan Liu is a fourth year Global Studies major and Digital Humanities minor at UCLA. He was a Contest Strategist on the team. After graduating, Jonathan will be living in Kyrgyzstan for the next two years while serving in the Peace Corps. His goal is to use the research skills he learned in Global Studies and Digital Humanities to conduct some of his own research while abroad.
